According to the American Dental Association, 10.8 million Americans suffer from temporomandibular syndrome (TMJ). The condition is caused by an improperly aligned jaw, which contributes to a myriad of problems such as: (1) headaches or migraines (2) vertigo (3) stiff neck, (4) tingling of the finger tips, etc. Neuromuscular dentistry seeks to cure TMJ by retraining the muscles, tissues, and nerves to properly align the jaw at rest. If left untreated, the jaw must work harder to perform basic functions, such as chewing or speaking and in turn may repeatedly injure the surrounding muscles.
Until recently, dentistry had viewed the teeth and jaw structure from a purely mechanical point of view. Medicine on the other hand, has always known that our skeletal positions are strongly influenced by our muscles. Now, both the medical and dental professions concur that 90% of headaches and facial pain are muscular in origin. Muscle imbalances throughout the body lead to posture problems, resulting in muscle and joint problems. These can be debilitating (runner's knee, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, and lower back). Our head and neck region is no different. No matter how our teeth are positioned, our muscles will struggle to create a comfortable bite. If our tooth position is improper, our body will be unsuccessful in accommodating, leading to the myriad of pain issues listed above.
The health of your bite is a major factor to consider in TMD. Your bite (the way your upper and lower teeth fit together) is determined by three main factors. These factors are your teeth, your jaw joints and the muscles that move them. When there is disharmony between these three factors the signs and symptoms of TMD begin to appear. It is at this point that your health and well-being begins to deteriorate as symptoms worsen.

The growing field of Neuromuscular Dentistry is helping thousands of people who suffer from TMD. The incredible success of the neuromuscular approach to TMD therapy lies in its ability to effectively treat the source of the dysfunction, rather than simply remedy the symptoms. Neuromuscular Dentistry recognizes that all three factors of the bite (occlusion) must function together in harmony for true health and comfort to exist. As a specially trained neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Bernath seeks to establish a harmonious relationship within your occlusion. By applying your body's natural laws of physiology and muscle isotonicity, the proper equilibrium can be restored to your masticatory system, leaving you healthy and feeling comfortable at last, without the use of potentially harmful medications. The benefits of this care extend far beyond those people suffering from chronic pain and migraine headaches. Neuromuscular principles can be applied to almost everyone, offering a lifetime of comfort, health and longevity for both you and your precious smile.
Our Goal: To relieve or eliminate pain and other TMD symptoms and restore physiologic harmony to the structures of the head and neck area.
